Nestled within earshot of the River Annan, and not far from the village of Ecclefechan (say that when you’ve had a skin full), sits a ghostly ruin and churchyard. Hoddom Cross Old Parish Church was built in 1817 by mason and architect John Park, and was recast in 1914 by Robert Douglas.
It’s not been in use since a fire burnt the roof down in 1975. The late Simon Marsden would have loved the feel of the place; an excellent setting to create otherworldly infrared images. I can’t get enough of churches and churchyards, and like many I just find them fascinating subject material.
Hoddom Old Parish Churchyard
“Of all ghosts the ghosts of our old loves are the worst.”
Arthur Conan Doyle
The site here goes long back before the ruin you see now, the original church was built in 1610 when the parishes of Hoddam, Ecclefechan and Luce on Annan were united. It contained within it a Roman altar stone, this was built into the porch of the present church, but after the fire in 1975 it was removed – to where I don’t know.
The churchyard has some ancient and mysterious headstones, many carved with coats of arms and emblems of death.
Directions: off the A74 at Ecclefechan and follow the signs for Hoddom Castle, ruin is on your left about a mile from Eccelfechan.
