I was treated to a beautiful Alpenglow last Thursday whilst kayaking on Ullswater, in the Lake District of Cumbria. The crags over to Arthur’s and Bonscale Pike with their covering of snow, looked spectacular.
It was with this scene in mind that I set out the next evening with a camera and tripod, over to Howtown on Ullswater to climb Hallin Fell.
The Setting Sun over to Ullswater and Helvellyn from Hallin Fell
A gem of a little hill, Hallin Fell stands proud at the head of Martindale Valley only a short distance from Howtown on Ullswater. Hallin Fell is easily accessed from St Peters Church, or as I approached it, straight up from a small pullover located on the winding road up to St Peters Church from Howtown.
At a height of 388m Hallin Fell is classed as a Marilyn in peak bagging terms. However, where Hallin Fell falls short in stature, it makes up dramatically with its viewpoint and is worthy of any list.
An imposing cairn stands at its height commanding views to High Street, Ullswater, Helvellyn and beyond. For me, the views to the Valleys of Martindale and Boardale, divided by Beda Fell are what I love most.
Unfortunately, the light was too subdued by the cloud to do this scene justice. But I did manage to capture some nice light over to Steel Knotts as well as Arthur’s and Bonscale Pike, on the route up.
I finished up the evening with a night shot of the famous Boat House.
There is something about Ullswater at night with snow-capped mountains, Norwegian fjords springs to mind. #LakeDistrictPhotographyWalks
