So what’s the connection between this woody inedible fungus, and the 5000 year old Tyrolean Iceman Ötzi, found in 1991?
Though inedible, the fibrous layer between the hoofs woody crust and its spore tubes, can be hammered flat, this amadou makes a highly combustible tinder for fire starting.
Amadou found in Ötzi’s possession, was an essential component of the the 5000 year old Tyrolean Iceman’s fire starting kit. The armadou also contained traces of iron pyrite, which when used in conjunction with flint, produces sparks.
I found this awesome collection of Horse hoof fungas, whilst visiting Ardkinglas Woodland Garden in Argyll Scotland, which I can recommend worthy of a visit for some amazing trees, fairy houses, and a Gruffalo!
